Faces of the Decision Team
The date for WGA's Member Forum, May 18, is approaching quickly, and that means the Grants Decision Team is nearing their final selection of grantees to recommend to the full membership for funding. Grant funding is often considered the "heart" of what we do in WGA. Who are these women who spend countless hours reviewing, deliberating and finally reaching a recommendation on which agencies should receive funds? To put a couple of faces to the Decision Team, we talked to two members: one a veteran, Julie Davis, and one in only her second grant cycle, Robin Dewey. An interesting theme emerged in their comments: Inspiration.

First, they are inspired by the work of the non-profit agencies serving women and girls. "There are so many great organizations out there," Robin said, and Julie agreed that she loved getting to know who's doing what in the community. Both women noted that WGA funds well-established agencies as well as smaller "grass roots" groups.

They are inspired by the process of decision. The 20-plus women on the team don't choose grant recipients lightly. Like most of what WGA does, it's strategic. The team engaged in a decision process designed to minimize individual bias and achieve consensus. Both Julie and Robin were pleased that meetings could be held in person this year. "Being in person is so much better than discussion on Zoom," Julie said.

Robin mentioned being inspired by the other members of WGA. "There is such a wealth of experience in our membership," she said, "women with legal, business, non-profit backgrounds. We can work together and leverage each other's experience."

Finally, both Julie and Robin are inspired to expand the influence of WGA. "It's really hard because there are so many worthy applicants and we can't afford to fund all of them," Julie said. "That's why we need more members in WGA, so we can help more women and girls!"

We Are Stronger Together
WGA celebrated our 20th anniversary in style last month at our "Stronger Together" event. Members and guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, conversation, and opportunities to shop at Rethreaded's retail store. The rain let up enough for us to socialize in the outdoor patio area, and we heard an update from Rethreaded's Founder and President Kristin Keen. Special thanks to Barb Wenger (20th Anniversary Chair), Mary Pietan and Kacie Smyth for their vision and work making this celebration both joyful and memorable. Thanks to all our members who worked on our anniversary events. And, thank you to our sponsors—Charles D. Hyman & Co, Florida Blue, Jacksonville University, Marie Cochrane, Martha Baker, Sally Lee, The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida, Truist, UF Health Jacksonville, and Vystar Credit Union. On to the next 20 years!
