WGA's History is Women's History
Women's History Month coincides with the conclusion of WGA's 20th Anniversary Celebration. It's inspiring to consider all that WGA has accomplished in our first 20 years:
  • Brought together more than 1,000 civic-minded women to become Members and strategic philanthropists
  • Awarded more than $7.7 million dollars in grants to 68 nonprofit agencies
  • Invested in improving the lives of more than 30,000 women and girls in Northeast Florida
  • Recently expanded grantmaking to women and girls in Putnam County, in addition to supporting organizations serving women and girls in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns Counties
  • Built an endowment of more than $5.9 million
  • Inspired 76 members to establish individual endowed Legacy Member Funds of at least $25,000
Be sure to come to the "Stronger Together" Celebration on March 24. That's next week, so if you haven't already, Register Now!

Grantee Highlight - MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation
This month we recognize WGA grantee MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation whose mission is to develop champions in classrooms, on tennis courts and throughout communities. Their vision is that the young people who participate in their program will be provided with the resources they need to rise to their full potential and become contributing members of society.

MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation was a grantee in 2020 and received a $100k grant to fund the implementation of the Girl Power! Overcoming Obstacles Curriculum, which provides classes for middle and high school girls focused on subjects such as goal setting, problem solving, conflict resolution, and financial literacy.

Grant Team Busy on All Fronts
The Grants Decision Team (18 Core Decision Team members, 14 Virtual Team members and 7 Finance Team Members) reviewed 39 applications, totaling over $1.7 million, and completed thorough proposal evaluations. The March 4 meeting determined which applicants met the pandemic relief specified criteria and will move forward to the next phase.

During March, the Evaluation Team will conduct 18 interim site visits of the 2020 and 2021 grantees, to assess how grants awarded for Breaking the Cycle of Female Poverty are faring in the midst of the pandemic.

Over 70 total Grants Team members are currently involved in WGA grant making - and we are extremely grateful for their time and commitment!
WGA Advocacy Update
The 2022 legislative session ended March 11th. Members of WGA's advocacy committee met with several House and Senate members throughout session to advocate for our priorities for women and girls, including access to affordable housing, child care, health insurance and mental health services. Because redistricting was a major issue that had to be tackled this session, fewer bills than normal were passed. Many of those dealing with these issues were stalled; however, more of our legislators are aware of them, and they will likely get more attention next year after elections.

One bill that did pass that will help girls in particular is the expungement of a nonjudicial arrest record of certain minors who successfully complete a diversion program for specified felony offenses. Another successful bill provides an exemption from public records requirements for a nonjudicial record of the arrest of a minor who has successfully completed a diversion program, and this will be applied retroactively. So girls who have committed non-violent offenses and completed the necessary diversion program will be able to seek employment and other opportunities much more easily.

The advocacy committee is planning to host a session debrief with local legislators in the coming months so stay tuned for more details.

We Need You!
WGA has available committee involvement and leadership opportunities!

Recently you received an email asking you to think of and submit the names of women you think would be good for greater involvement in WGA. Please take time to think about this and make some recommendations. WGA is only as good as the strong women we have leading us!

And very importantly, seriously consider self-nominating. You know if this is something you would be interested in as well as if the timing is right in your life.

WGA actively invites women of different backgrounds, perspectives, opinions, experiences, personalities, ideologies and lifestyles. We believe that bringing together diverse voices-and the conversations and connections that result-makes us stronger.

This year we are looking to fill the following: At-large members, Committee chairs for many committees, and, of course, involvement as a committee member.

If you suggest a name, we will reach out to that person for a conversation and determine if indeed this works for them. Sometimes timing isn't right, but we will keep their names for the future.

Thank you for your help. Please make your suggestions to Mary Pietan at mfpietan@gmail.com by March 31st.
