Happy New Year!
It is my sincerest hope that you and your families are healthy and well; and you were able to gather with loved ones to joyfully celebrate the season.

The new year ushers in feelings of excitement, renewal, and opportunity. WGA continues to be laser-focused on our mission to improve the lives of women and girls in Northeast Florida, and inspire women to be strategic philanthropists. We remain guided by our strategic plan and listening to your voices through our member survey and member gatherings.

We are proud to nourish a community of strategic philanthropists who have contributed $7.7 million to 68 unique nonprofit partners, enhancing the lives of over 30,000 women and girls for 20 years. We know the ripple effects of these statistics go much further and deeper as helping one woman helps a family, lifting one girl changes her life trajectory.

Though our mission and vision remain unwavering, the pandemic has driven home the point that we must also be nimble in the face of change as follows:
  • Extensive research and close dialogue with our grantee partners resulted in a meaningful recalibration in our grantmaking this year to focus on core mission funding for greater impact. The rationale for this pivot was presented at the Annual Meeting in October. More information is included in the ENews story below.
  • We plan to step up our efforts to grow our membership as diverse and inclusive as the communities we hope to shape. We look to build new friends and strategic partners for greater success.
  • Importantly, we promise to work diligently to make all our members feel welcomed, valued, and exceptionally proud to be a part of the WGA collective.
To that end, please call me at any time with suggestions, comments, or questions.

Cheers to you and 2022!
WGA Shifts Grantmaking for 2022 to "Critical Core Mission" Funding
The WGA Core Mission Funding grants initiative has liftoff! An impressive, 39 prior WGA grantees submitted applications, requesting nearly $1.8 million in funding support.

WGA made the strategic decision to shift its 2022 Grant Strategy to focus on core mission funding to best support our nonprofit partners with pandemic-related challenges. This essential shift was led by insights from our research and conversations with valued partners, and incorporated an updated action plan.

Core mission funding is the practice of awarding grants to fund a nonprofit's basic needs to support their mission's operations rather than earmarking the grant for specific programs and projects.

On January 19, the 71 WGA members of the Decision, Evaluation, and Grants Finance teams attended a virtual "hands-on" training on the updated decision process, the partner-oriented evaluation processes, and the expanded role of the grants finance experts.

With the 2022 grant process now in motion, we want to ensure members understand exactly why the Grants Leadership Team (GLT) made this decision and how it will support WGA's mission and better support WGA's nonprofit partners this year.

Congrats to Grantee Year Up's New Graduates and a Big Thank You
On behalf of WGA, the Steering Committee provided a congratulations video to the Year Up Jacksonville (YUJAX) class 13 graduates for their virtual graduation program.

On behalf of the students, the leadership and the staff team of YUJAX, the Women's Giving Alliance was nominated and unanimously selected to be their January 2022 Cornerstone Award honoree! (Year Up was awarded a WGA grant in 2020)

The Cornerstone Award is presented at each of Year Up's bi-annual graduations to an individual or organization that embodies Year Up's mission to close the Opportunity Divide. Cornerstone Award winners go above and beyond to change minds about what is truly possible in this country by supporting their students, staff, and organization.

The award was presented during Year Up's pre-recorded virtual YUJAX Class 13 January 18th Graduation program which was aired, at 6pm on the YUJAX Facebook Page.

WGA gives a special thanks to members Irene Phelps and Kirsten Martino who have worked hard to elevate WGA's presence with our grantees, and Evaluation Team members Audrey Gardner and Melissa Shrader who have worked closely with Year Up since the grant was awarded. Thank you!

The Impact of COVID-19 Report by Florida Nonprofit Alliance
Florida Nonprofit Alliance surveyed nonprofits across the state of Florida in late 2021 to get an update on how the COVID-19 pandemic affected them throughout the year. The survey focused on the impacts on their programs, human resources, finances, funding, and planning. A total of 1,565 nonprofit organizations participated in this research.

The key findings are split into two categories: the challenging news and the bright spots.

Some of the challenging news:
  • Nonprofits are not recovering quickly financially
  • Nearly half have spent some or all of their reserves
  • Fundraising and funding remain both the largest concerns and a challenge
  • Nonprofits are seeing an increase in demand for services
  • The pandemic continues to take a toll on volunteering
On the bright side:
  • Nonprofits are getting back to providing in-person services
  • Slightly more than half expect their 2022 budgets to increase over 2021 budgets
  • Nonprofits are largely not concerned with closing their doors
  • Nonprofits are very interested in maintaining collaborations and partnerships that helped get them through the pandemic
