The Community Foundation offices are closed through Labor Day due to the uptick in Coronavirus. We hope everyone stays healthy. We kindly ask you to continue to be flexible with us as we may have to make last minute adjustments for meetings and events due to the ongoing pandemic.
Hello WGA Members and Friends,

I hope everyone is enjoying a nice summer and finding time to rest and be with family and friends.

Many of you may be concerned about how this pandemic is impacting local women and girls and our current grants. It is important for you to know: all our grant agency partners are doing extraordinary work during these challenging times, often with staffing shortages, to continue serving their clients and meeting their grant objectives. As you would expect, WGA has been working with a few of our grant agency partners to either extend grant deadlines or find creative ways to meet the grant goals when the pandemic upended original plans. You can be quite proud of our local nonprofits, and our WGA grant team members, for their resourcefulness and unyielding determination to best serve women and girls.

Rest assured, your treasured grantmaking dollars are hard at work. WGA will continue to be nimble, adopt research-based best-practices, and work closely with our nonprofits to help move the needle for women and girls in Northeast Florida! In closing, as we are approaching 18 months of this pandemic, I hope we all find the capacity to have patience and kindness toward ourselves and one another.

Meet Our New WGA Director!

It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome Kacie Smyth as the new WGA Director for The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida! She joins Joanne Cohen and the Philanthropic Services team. Kacie brings nearly a decade of experience in nonprofit strategic planning, donor relations and stewardship, community engagement, marketing, program development and events management to her new role. We know that Kacie's experience managing complex volunteer organizations and her expertise in retention and fundraising will help WGA achieve its strategic goals of retaining and growing membership, maximizing the benefits of our investments for women and girls in our community, and growing community partnerships. Kacie and her husband, Travis, live in Ponte Vedra and love the beach.

"I am thrilled to be joining The Community Foundation team and look forward to supporting WGA's efforts in improving the lives of women and girls in Northeast Florida," Kacie commented.

Kacie has hit the ground running this summer and we're thrilled to have her on board. Please join us in giving her a warm WGA welcome!

News From The Grants Front
Fifty-six WGA members who navigated and adapted grant making and evaluation over the past 18 months led to WGA's award of a record 10 grants ($587,500) in May 2021, and the ongoing funding for 15 grants made in 2019 and 2020!

Want to contribute to WGA's grant efforts?
We want you! Participation in either decision and/or evaluation teams are richly rewarding opportunities to meet philanthropic inclined members, and to better understand our innovative, resilient non-profits. Grant team members participate in grant making as a Volunteer Reader, Core Team, or Finance Team member; or grant evaluation through periodic contact with a specific non-profit over a two year period. If you are interested, please contact Grant Leadership (Allison Newberry-Dennis, Linda Simmons).

Next Steps
We will convene all Decision and Evaluation team members in September to share our learnings, what's working and needs improvement for our future.

20th Anniversary Save These Dates!
Sept. 17, 2021 – A special Luncheon for WGA Founding Members and Legacy Members will be held at the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens from 11:30 – 1:00. It is too late to become a Founding Member, but it is NOT TOO LATE to become a Legacy Member and attend this special event! Call Joanne Cohen at 904-356-4483.

March 24, 2022 – Stronger Together Celebration at Rethreaded's new Delores Barr Weaver Campus of Hope at 515 9th Street E. This event will give you and your spouse/significant other a chance to enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres with members and community friends to celebrate the impact of WGA over the last 20 years. Tickets on sale in January 2022.

Agency Convening Session Held This Summer
For the first time in two years, the Grants Leadership Team hosted an in-person Annual Agency Convening Session for 26 active grantees supporting the Breaking the Cycle of Female Poverty strategic initiative. The Cummer Museum provided a special backdrop for this gathering of iconic non-profits who, through the first four years of the initiative, have supported over 8,200 women and girls through WGA grants. While we learned how highly adaptable and resilient they've been to date, these non-profits are facing increased demands to support the most severely impacted demographic of the pandemic, women and girls.
Downtowners Connect
On July 13th over thirty WGA members and guests gathered for our first in-person Connector event at the River Club in downtown Jacksonville. Attendees enjoyed wine and cheese and heard a brief program and updates from the WGA leadership team. They also participated in an art project organized by Barb Wenger that highlights the impact of collective giving in honor of our 20th anniversary celebration. It was a delightful feeling to gather in person again. Registration is now open for the other Fall Connector Events.
