Volunteering: Heart and Soul of WGA
If grant making is the core function of the Women's Giving Alliance, volunteering is our heart and soul. In addition to participating in WGA by making the all-important annual contribution, many WGA members spend countless hours as active volunteers, driven by a few similar motivations.

Jennifer Kowkabany is Co-chair of the Grants Decision Team, and Irene Phelps is her counterpart on the Grants Evaluation Team. Both echo the sentiment of WGA President Jan Healy, who says she volunteers "to pursue my passion to improve the lives of women and girls." All three women volunteer because they want to make a difference.

Jennifer attended her first WGA Member Forum six years ago. She voted on the recommended grants but wanted to know more. "I wondered how that list of grantees was determined," she says. So she joined the Grants Decision Team and began co-chairing three years ago. "I love the process," she says. "I love being in the room where decisions are made."

"Breaking the cycle of female poverty really connected with me," Irene says. "I wanted to make a difference. This is what we come together to do."

Challenging Us to Embrace DEI
Over two engaging sessions, Yolanda F. Johnson, CEO of YFJ Consulting, LLC met with your WGA Steering Committee for thoughtful engagement and self-reflection under the title of "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) from the Inside Out." Ms. Johnson and her team facilitated discussions on the fundamentals of the DEI, terms such as Unconscious Bias, Allyship, and Microaggressions. She challenged us in self-reflection through a combination of breakout sessions and homework. This work is leading to specific actions we, as individuals and as a collective, are implementing to make us better philanthropists and grant makers.

Response to the sessions was overwhelmingly positive! Stay tuned: we are looking forward to sharing a glimpse with you during the Member Forum.
WGA Advocates for Women and Girls
Florida is in the midst of its legislative session and WGA's advocacy committee is busy! Our members have been meeting with legislators (virtually) to remind them of the outstanding work WGA is doing in Northeast Florida, as well as advocating for affordable housing and other bills that improve the lives of women and their families. Please contact the committee co-chairs, Poppy DeCunto or Saralyn Grass if you are interested in helping with these outreach efforts to our legislators.
