  November 2022
Letter from the President
While we all know the importance of expressing our gratitude all year long, November provides several meaningful opportunities for us to give thanks, and this year was no exception. This newsletter contains stories of giving and gratitude; recognition and reflection; and heartache and hope.

November began with antisemitic displays across Jacksonville. The month is ending with the promise of the Together Strong Community Fund at the Jewish Federation & Foundation. The Community Foundation has made an investment in the initiatives supported by this Fund, and we hope that you will join us as well.

The Community Foundation was the title sponsor of National Philanthropy Day in mid-November – where attendees had the opportunity to see a new video produced by the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida. Click this link to see why we Believe in the Good in our community.

And as we welcome new staff members to our team at The Community Foundation, we are saying farewell and giving thanks to others who have contributed so much to our Foundation, our sector and our community. Joanne Cohen and Mark LeMaire each served the Foundation for a decade and were tapped for larger roles at other organizations. We are happy for them and wish them well as they share their deep expertise and passion more broadly. Sally Pettegrew retired after serving three years as executive assistant. She is enjoying more time cooking and gardening and finding new ways to engage after a stellar career in the nonprofit sector that spanned more than thirty years. And finally, Susan Edelman, our first Vice President of Strategic Communications, is retiring in December after a decade at the Foundation and a long and successful career in strategic communications in the corporate sector. She is masterful at finding ways to make our work clear and compelling across multiple communities and multiple constituencies while also building and protecting our brand.

I'm hopeful that each of you had opportunities to give thanks to people who have made a difference in your life this year. Thank you for your connection to The Community Foundation and for the difference that you make every day by generously sharing your time, talent, treasure and testimony. That's the power of giving back and giving forward.

Supporting Jewish Life in Northeast Florida
The Community Foundation is proud to support the Jewish Federation & Foundation of Northeast Florida as part of the Together Strong Community Fund, established by David Miller on behalf of the Miller families with $1 million to address antisemitism and to help bring the community together.

In early October, even before hateful messages appeared in our community, The Community Foundation had already approved a $30,000 grant to the Jewish Federation for the Community Security Initiative, a nationwide effort that supports local organizations to improve security, crisis preparedness, and emergency communication in local Jewish organizations, schools, and synagogues.

Sadly, threats to the Jewish community are not new, and The Community Foundation has long supported interfaith collaboration and understanding in Northeast Florida through OneJax and other partners for exactly this reason. The new fund will continue this work by igniting a community-wide endeavor to use education, conversation and interaction to combat the root causes of bias.

We're grateful to the Miller families for their extraordinary generosity and leadership, and we invite others to join their matching challenge to support this work through the Jewish Federation. Learn more at

Taking the Temperature of Health Care Access
JaxCareConnect is a project of the Duval Safety Net Collaboration started 10 years ago by non-profit health care leaders to connect uninsured residents to community health and wellness resources. At our October Donors Forum, Jenny O'Donnell, JaxCareConnect Administrator, presented our group with an overview of the organization. Our panelists included: Michael Boylan, Jacksonville City Council Member, Chair of the NE Florida Long Term Recovery Organization, and Board Member of Volunteers in Medicine; and Melanie Patz, President and CEO of United Way. Read a brief recap of the event here; watch the full recording here.

Celebrating the Impact of Philanthropists
The generosity of philanthropists makes a difference through a "love of humankind." To celebrate National Philanthropy Day, The Community Foundation uplifted the impact of local donors during the Association of Fundraising Professionals' annual luncheon, supporting this event as the title sponsor. The Honorable Brian J. Davis, the chair of the board of trustees, spoke about The Community Foundation's investments in Black philanthropy and other important initiatives this year. Nancy and Gary Chartrand, longtime fundholders at The Community Foundation, were honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for their incredible contributions over the years, and President Nina Waters was featured in a video talking about their leadership in Northeast Florida. Special thanks to our own Kacie Smyth, Donor Services Director, who co-chaired the event.

A Proud Moment for the LGBTQ Community Fund
This month, Glenn Miller, Chair of the LGBTQ Community Fund for Northeast Florida Advisory Board, accepted the 2022 Delores Barr Weaver Elder Advocate Award on behalf of the LGBTQ Community Fund for Northeast Florida. The Fund was established to build greater togetherness within our LGBTQ communities and to support Northeast Florida welcoming and celebrating its LGBTQ population, and the Fund has awarded nearly $1 million since it began making grants in 2014. Last month, The LGBTQ Fund approved $87,000 in grants to five local nonprofits: the Center for Independent Living, Fernandina Beach Pride, JASMYN, the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida and Transcending Adolescence. Learn more about the grants here.
