Art Ventures: Individual Artists

  • Individual Artists – Grants of up to $3,500 are available to support individual artists as they advance their work. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, and have resided in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau or St. Johns counties for at least 12 months at the time of application.

Application Process

  • Applications will be available on April 15, 2013
  • Two Learning Sessions will be held in Jacksonville on April 16 at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. in the Riverfront Conference Room, 245 Riverside Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32202.
  • A Learning Session will be held in St. Augustine on April 18 at 10:00 a.m., at 370 Beach Blvd. A1A, St. Augustine Beach, FL 32080, St. Johns County Cultural Council/The Dance Company.
  • Applications are due by June 13, 2013, 5:00 p.m.
  • Applications are reviewed by a committee comprised of representatives from The Foundation’s Board of Trustees and community representatives with subject area expertise. The identity of committee members is confidential. The committee will make recommendations to The Foundation’s Board of Trustees for approval. Grants will be awarded by November 1, 2013.

2012

  • Sharon Weightman Hoffman - $3,500 to create a two-act play entitled “Ashley Street Blues: The Life & Music of Blind Blake”, a one-man play about a brilliant African-American blues musician with close ties to the Jacksonville community.
  • Meredith Tousey - $1,000 to produce a series of 10-12 paintings of various sizes depicting both present day and historic imagery of Jacksonville.
  • Thomas Carey - $3,495 to purchase a camera and photography supplies to create a photography collection.
  • Holly Draper - $3,500 to purchase supplies to set up a studio to establish herself as an independent artist. Included will be the purchase of a display table and awning enabling her to participate in the Riverside Arts Market.
  • Lisa O'Neil - $3,500 to produce 7 historic portraits relating to the history of St. Augustine, FL to be displayed at the St. Augustine Art Association as part of St. Augustine’s 450th anniversary celebration.
  • Helen Cowart - $3,500 to purchase a kiln to use to produce a series of drawings that fuse images into the glass.
  • Kate Garcia Rouh - $3,470 to create a mosaic on the floor and interior walls/columns of the gazebo at Yacht Basin Park in Riverside/Avondale, a City of Jacksonville Park.
  • *Overstreet Ducasse - $3,300 to create a visual documentary, Floreada Targets, which will focus on people, places, and the events that have helped shape the city of Jacksonville and our local communities.

2011

  • Luis Abella - $3,500 to strengthen skills, qualifications and impact on ballet students in St. Augustine by completing American Ballet Theater Teacher Certification sessions.
  • Mary Atwood - $3,500 to purchase a new printer to produce a collection of large black and white photographs of historical sites in areas near Jacksonville, to be exhibited in association with the 450th Anniversary of the founding of St. Augustine.
  • Christina Foard - $3,475 to purchase a projector and appropriate materials to expand the scale of work to create 10-foot walled landscapes. The grant would allow Ms. Foard, a co-founder of Imagination Squared (imaginationsquared.com) to move from small to major gallery exhibitions.
  • Julianne French - $3,500 to purchase equipment and materials to create a series of acrylic and oil paintings on plexiglass to produce full-length, vertical portraits of the sitter.
  • Pamela Miller - $2,754 to purchase a new computer and printer to publish and reproduce works of art. Recently selected as the 2011 Jazz Festival Poster Artist, Ms. Miller will publish a children's book she authored and illustrated in 2007.
  • Carrie J. Richter - $3,500 to pay for printing costs to illustrate a book in which the story is told as effectively by the illustrations as by the written words. Endorsed by the Early Learning Coalition of Putnam and St. John's Counties, the book will be published in English and eventually in Spanish and can be used for children and adults learning to read and or learning another language.

2010

  • Douglas J. Eng - $3,500 to fund photo print production and preparation for exhibition, including a printed catalog and a website, about the 65-year history of The Wing Lee Yuen Truck Farm on Imeson Road in Jacksonville, which was the leading producer of Chinese produce in the 1940s to 1960s. A set of prints will be produced and donated to the City of Jacksonville for the public record.
  • Ian Mairs - $3,000 to fund a 10-day workshop production of a new play entitled "Withitness" being presented off Broadway in New York in July 2010. Grant dollars will be used for rental of theater space, actors’ stipends, printing and advertising costs.
  • Carlos Miller - $3,500 to produce a show of choreography that represents the artist’s current and future goals for creation of a dance company. Funds will be used to secure performance and rehearsal space, costumes, lighting and set designs, marketing and publicity materials.
  • Skye D. Schwarzer - $3,500 to purchase a drill press and a larger kiln to produce more and larger pieces of glasswork. This also will enable the artist to design and create light fixtures, and Schwarzer will donate light fixtures to the Youth Crisis Center in Jacksonville.
  • Jay R. Solomon - $2,800 to purchase a high resolution camera and a photography-specific fine art printer to produce abstract art from realistic photographs.
  • Mark Wilson Sain - $3,500 – to purchase a professional level 35mm digital camera and lens to create and produce more and larger images in fine art form.
